I couldn’t find this answer very easily by searching so here it is in case it helps someone else:
When you are using dynamic paint and you want to copy the settings of one brush into multiple objects, selected the objects, then select the object you want to copy from and finally go to object–>make links–>modifiers.
In other words dynamic paint is counted as a modifier even though the settings reside inside the physics tab.
